The New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies has called for the fans to be given lifetime bans who displayed Nazi symbols and salutes at the match.
More than 16,400 crowds gathered at Commbank Stadium to watch the final match between Macarthur FC and Sydney United. Macarthur FC won the final match of the Australia Cup final by 2-0 against Sydney United.
In the pre-match welcome to country and the national anthem, some Sydney United supporters booed with sang fascist songs, displayed Nazi symbols associated with the Ustaše, and made Hitler salutes visible on camera.
Darren Bark, the CEO of the state Jewish Board of Deputies, condemned the display of Nazi symbols and salutes during the game in strong words.
Darren said these vile symbols and salutes have no place in modern Australian society. He said they represent the ultimate manifestation of evil that led to the murder of millions of innocent civilians during WWII, including 6 million Jews and Australian diggers who lost their lives fighting against the Nazis.
On Sunday, Football Australia said their behavior was not consistent with Football Australia’s values and wider community expectations.
Football Australia, in a statement, said they took steps during the match to address some isolated behaviors by a small minority of individuals, including facilitating the evictions of eight people.
In the statement, it is said Football Australia is assessing all footage and images available of certain individuals which are of concern to our organization and the broader Australian football community.
NSW police said it condemned antisocial and offensive behavior whether in a public place or at an organized event. NSW police said in a statement anyone who wants to report a crime or who has information on the incident is urged to come forward.
